In this week’s Princh Library Blog post, we will look into the upcoming event happening in the UK – Green Libraries Week. This article, written by the Project Support Officer, Hinna Vayani, introduces the initiative and encourages more libraries to participate!

What is the Libraries Week

Libraries Week at CILIP is our annual showcase of the best that libraries have to offer. This year, Libraries Week is transforming into Green Libraries Week, following on from our inaugural Green Libraries Conference held this spring.

Green Libraries Week celebrates the great work taking place in libraries across the UK focused on sustainability and climate change. It is a great opportunity to explore the innovative and creative activities that libraries have initiated to support their communities with sustainable action. Green Libraries Week is funded by Nielsen Book Data.

CILIP aims to encourage and support libraries in every sector to reach out to their community and local media to highlight the diverse ways that they are motivating their users to build skills and confidence to take those steps towards sustainable action.

For the first time, we have introduced an interactive map to chart the inventive and exciting green events and activities taking place around the UK from 2 October. View the map here.

Check out the diverse and creative range of activities that our colleagues have already uploaded:

  • Lavender planting
  • Let’s Talk Composting
  • Make a bug hotel – for children
  • Planting broad bean seeds in jam jars
  • Plant collection talk by Plant Heritage UK
  • Greening your home – with a top climate scientist
  • Reflective Reading Club session at King’s College Hospital
  • Make a bird feeder

Resources and downloads

CILIP’s Green Libraries Week team supports libraries with their whole marketing campaign. We have created downloadable and printable resources to advertise their events and create awareness online. Our ‘Get Started Guide’ helps libraries make a step-by-step plan from the initiation to the final evaluation.

We also offer a Marketing Toolkit to support libraries to get the most out of Libraries Week and to amplify and create a buzz around their library’s events. Examples include developing your audience, targeting your marketing and making use of your library’s resources.

Posters

We have designed a suite of downloadable eye-catching posters, a logo and social media templates. These are available in English and Welsh and follow the theme of creating green spaces, a greener planet and celebrating your community. Also included is a step-by-step guide to help people customise their posters and advice on how best to make the most of them.

The Green Libraries Campaign

Green Libraries Week will also serve as the launch platform for the new Green Libraries Campaign, representing the new phase of development for libraries in supporting climate action. Keep an eye out for more information on this in the next few days.

We will be back with another interesting article from the library world soon!
