Improper grammar can alter a sentence and make the intended message unclear. With the rise of informal communication, it is important to understand which grammar rules are okay to break. Libraries provide great resources to help individuals improve their grammar, and we’ve also included a fun infographic that might provide further insights on grammar rules. The original infographic is called 15 Grammar Rules It’s Okay to Break by Expert Editor.
Grammar Rules
We get it: Rules are annoying. They put you in a cage. They box you up. They turn a mind full of endless possibilities into one which must carefully tiptoe around, so as not to step over any rules.
When it comes to grammar, who cares?! As long as you can say what’s on your mind, then you’re set. Why should you learn the stuffy old rules?
But let’s step back for a second and think about it. Maybe rules do serve a purpose. Need an example?
Look at Jackson Pollock, an American painter in the 20th century. Pollock was a major player in the abstract expressionist movement, which helped define the “weird” and “unusual” modern art world we know today. He developed a technique known as the drip technique, where he would splash paint against the canvass, letting the painting paint itself.
And it was revolutionary. Pollock would go down as one of the most influential artists of the modern world. But any preschooler could do what Pollock did, right?
Here’s the difference: Pollock knew the rules. He’d studied art his entire life, and it was only by knowing the rules that he could develop something so radically new.
So take a moment and check out these 15 grammar rules, and maybe you can change the English language someday, too:
